Major exhibitions for the autumn

A trip to Paris is a voyage into one of the world’s great capitals of culture, as amply demonstrated by the wide and diverse selection of exhibitions the city hosts. Oscar Wilde at the Petit Palais

Beginning September 28th the Petit Palais has the honour to invite you to discover The Absolute Impertinent, an exclusive exhibition entirely dedicated to the Irish literary genius, Oscar Wilde. For the first time in Paris you will have the privilege to discover the life and work of the man who scandalised Victorian Britain, via more than 200 artefacts, including unpublished documents, photographs, manuscripts, rare editions, drawings and caricatures. To these are added some of his personal effects and paintings on loan from institutions in the United States, Ireland, England, Italy, Canada and, of course, from other French museums. A section of the exhibition devoted to Wilde’s personal history displays various portraits never revealed until now, and a series of 27 photographic portraits taken by Napoleon Sarony during the author’s American lecture tour in 1882. Portraits of relatives, friends and even pets will uncover some mysteries of his personal life and his connections in the literary world.

René Magritte at the Centre Georges Pompidou

Take advantage of your cultural getaway to enjoy a major exhibition dedicated to the work of the Belgian artist René Magritte, which runs from September 21st 2016 to January 23rd 2017 at the Centre Pompidou. Entitled The Treachery of Images, this fresh and fascinating thematic exhibition reinterprets Magritte’s oeuvre in the light of five distinct elements that played a key role in the artist's creative life. These he referred to as words, shadows, curtains, fire and the fragmented body. Using these as a starting point the exhibition will explore the artist's view of the world and his thoughts on the mysteries of realism and likeness. It will also examine his penchant for deceptive imagery and how this defined his position in the Surrealist movement in art, and juxtapose his paintings with images from antiquity.

Hergé at the Grand Palais

To end your holiday in style, with a cultural touch that is also a lot of fun, don’t miss the new exhibition entirely devoted to the work of the brilliant Georges Remi, the Belgian comic strip creator better known as Hergé. This look into the creative mind of a visual visionary can be seen at the Grand Palais from September 28th to January 25th. Hergé, now recognised as the father of the European comic strip, was one of the first cartoonists on this side of the Atlantic to adopt the American-style speech balloon. The event is organised by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux - Grand Palais, in collaboration with the Hergé Museum. Here you will learn about the creativity and inspirations of the man who gave the world the Exploits of Quick and Flupke, the Adventures of Jo, Zette and Jocko and, best of all, the enchanting series of graphic albums featuring the immortal Tintin.
